Operation RubyThroat: GLOBE Hummingbird Project Training Workshop
Do you watch for the first hummingbird of the season, grow plants that attract hummingbirds, or just like to watch hummingbirds at your feeders? Then the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) workshop is for you! Be a part of this exciting hummingbird study program that lets you use your hummingbird observations to assist in hummingbird research. Bill Hilton, Jr., of Operation RubyThroat, will teach you how to become certified to collect data about hummingbirds and share it with scientists, students, and other people across the GLOBE network. Hummingbird Festival
If you like hummingbirds, then Nature Station is the place for you this weekend! Ruby-throated hummingbirds flock to the Nature Station in huge numbers during early August as they visit our flowers and feeders to fuel up for their amazing journey south. Join Bill Hilton, Jr., of Operation RubyThroat, as he demonstrates hummingbird banding and discusses hummingbird migration and biology. Enjoy a variety of programs, demonstrations, and activities focused on hummingbirds and other backyard wildlife and how you can help them in your own backyard. Take part in a guided 1-mile hike to search for signs that the fall season has arrived. Our hike will take us through the forest and to the lakeshore. Program free to LBL visitors. Meet at Nature Station.

Join the fun as we learn about and play music with noisemakers made from nature's materials. Try gourd rattles from Guatemala, rain sticks from Mexico, clay flutes from Greece, wooden drums from the American Southwest, and more. We'll also use wooden frogs from Vietnam to make our own frog pond chorus. Program free with NS admission.

Spinning, Knitting, & Sewing: Making Warm Winter Clothing
Since the spring sheep shearing, the farmwomen have been busy at their spinning wheels producing yarn to be knitted, crocheted or woven into winter clothing. Calling all Cub Scout leaders! Cub Scouts can work towards the requirements for their World Conservation Award at the Nature Station today. We will offer a variety of activities and programs especially for Cub Scouts. Wolf Cub Scouts can work on their Birds Elective, Bear Cubs Scouts can work on their Sharing Your World with Wildlife Achievement, and Webelos can work on their Naturalist Activity Badge. The screech owl, our smallest resident owl, will happily live near humans if it has a safe place to make its nest. Relax at the Nature Station as we warm up with some hot beverages and backyard bird watching. Audubon Christmas Bird Count
MNATURE STATION
Birders nationwide participate in this annual Audubon Society bird count, and you can be part of it here at LBL. We are looking for birders to help cover different sections of the count area. Less experienced birders are welcome to participate as well. We will meet at the Nature Station and organize into teams to include everyone. You can go out in the morning or spend the full day. Bring a sack lunch and meet back for our lunch-time round-up of the morning's sightings. Dress for the weather. $5. Fee goes to National Audubon Society. Meet at Nature Station.
